Dr Dan discovers the Legends of Broomhill

As a long standing supporter of Broomhill Library and Swimming Pool, Dr Dan was delighted to visit Broomhill and to unveil a brand new interpretation board, alongside Suffolk County Councillor Inga Lockington, highlighting the many legends associated with the area.

Ipswich and in particular, Broomhill, has a long association with swimming and in its heyday in the 1960s, there was an Olympic size outdoor pool at Broomhill, enjoyed by many for generations. Since its demise, Dr Dan has championed the return of this fabulous community asset.

The Broomhill Trust has been campaigning for some considerable time now to have the pool re-opened as a lido and community facility. As a strong believer in the importance of healthy lifestyle choices, Dr Dan feels that a community facility such as this would be a welcome addition to the area ensuring that not only past generations, perhaps with fond memories of the pool, but also future generations to come can enjoy the benefits of outdoor swimming in a safe, social and supervised environment.

The new facility would not just be restricted to swimming; it will be East Anglia's only 50m+ outdoor lido which will be heated and will also be suitable for a number of leisure pursuits such as diving, canoeing, water polo, sailing and triathlon. With the recent success of Team GB's athletes in the Olympic Games, not to mention the ongoing successes of our Paralympians Dr Dan would like to see Broomhill being utilised as a leisure facility for young people from the area who may be inspired to try their hand at water sports as a direct result.

The site of the former pool is the original birthplace of Ipswich Town Football Club and a great number of legends associated with the Club, such as former managers Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, are closely associated with the Broomhill area.

The new interpretation boards, funded by Broomhill Pool Trust and Broomhill Library Friends and Cllr. Inga Lockington, are installed at Broomhill Park, towards the top end of Westwood Avenue.
